The Salcombe Lanterns are a blend of both digital and traditional craft practice that challenges the technical limitations of the ceramic process.
The iconic Salcombe nautical scenes have been created from photographs, they include The Salcombe Ferries, fishing scenes and the famous Salcombe Yawls, the designs have been manipulated and reduced to line drawings and etched using a laser cutter to create the casting moulds.
The ultra-thin bone china casts are over painted and bisque fired, then sanded back to reveal the sgraffito design. A second high fire vitrifies the bone china, creating a very thin, strong and translucent vessel. Each piece is unique and warps and bends slightly in fierce heat of the kiln.
In low light when lit with a tealight, brings the designs to life.
Acutely observed by a born and bred Salcombe maker.
